Findley Profile
1) Describe your call to plant a church?
As I looked around in churches in our community, I saw very few of the hardworking, blue collar, younger people that make up about a fourth of our community… most are either unchurched or de-churched. Over the course of a year or so, God gave us a vision to proclaim the Scriptures in a way that these friends and families could understand, and, in doing so, create a desire and discipleship process for transformation into the likeness of the person, life, joy, and glory of Jesus Christ.
2) Describe the community where you are planting?
Fredericksburg is located in the Texas hill country, 70 miles west of "weird" Austin and 70 miles north of San Antonio. Our community struggles to maintain its identity as a quaint German antique community as many are moving in to enjoy all Fritztown (Fredericksburg) has to offer.
3) How are you developing your core group?
Our Restore ministry serves as the hands and feet of Christ in our community. We consider our Restore groups to be our smaller home-based church families that meet weekly over a meal, conversation, life-application. Three main ideas are central to Restore: Growing in Truth, Sharing Life Together, and Living on Mission. Often we are asked, "how many people are in your church?" The answer is simple, rather than how many seats are being filled on a Sunday morning, the answer is however many are Restoring and being Restored.
4) What is the church's vision, mission, and values?
Mission: Love God, Love Others (Great Commandment)
Primary values: Truth of Scripture, love of God, life of service
Other core values: multiplication; every member a minister; simplicity; agility; fewer people, multiple churches; smaller staff; technological
5) What does community life look like in your church?
We only have three ministries at South Church: Restore (few friends in host homes apply the Scripture & transform the community), Proclaim (worship in song, supplication, Scripture, supper, and support), and Sustain (1 time per week, 2 friends get together to seek Christ via… 3 spiritual disciplines: prayer, daily Scripture reading, and accountability). Our Restore ministry teams are indepently ministering all the time… some large project ministries (like planting an organic garden at a local low-rent apartment complex), as well as smaller, more frequent ways of expressing the love of Christ through meals, baby-sitting, etc.
6) How can we pray for you?
Pray that the living water Jesus provides would flow up to eternal life: that we'd see and know the glory of Jesus so that we'll love Him supremely and serve Him joyfully. Pray that this love is expressed in song, in service, and in the faithful and living proclamation of His Word through every believer in our church family. We firmly believe that—as this happens, as we seek first the King and His kingdom—discipleship, multiplication, and the building up of the body of Christ will be the fruit of the Spirit and His labor with and within us.
